Artifact: ELL Report
Reflection
1. Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was/were your individual contribution(s)?
I am using the ELL report that was done as a part of the instructional technology specialist program in order to meet this standard. This report was done in conjunction with my time as an instructional technology coach at Lake Forest Elementary School in Sandy Springs, GA. Almost the entire population of Lake Forest are English as Second language Learners making it a wonderful place to meet the standard on Diversity, Cultural Understanding, and Global Awareness.
2. Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it is placed. See the portfolio rubric and watch the videos for more details on what to include in your reflection for this question. You must respond to each of the items on the rubric in this question! It is VERY IMPORTANT that you address ALL of the criteria on the rubric. This one question may need to be several paragraphs long in order to address all of the items on the rubric.
This article demonstrates mastery of this standard because being a coach at a school like Lake Forest requires you to use digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. When you work with ELL students on a station level you have to have an understanding of supporting student needs, enhancing cultural understanding, and increasing global awareness in order to be effective. That station work is what lots of my work at Lake Forest entailed, and this article does a good job depicting that.
3. What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact? Not changing anything is NOT an acceptable response.
I think whenever you work with ELL type student you always learn something. One of the biggest takeaways is the need for patience and a slow methodical approach as you explain the assignment to students. When you talk ELL students, there are such varied levels of understanding that you really need to personalize your assignments and explanations in some way. I think the main thing that would improve this artifact is to add other experiences I had at Lake Forest to it.
4. How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement, faculty development, or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
This artifact could be used with both student learning and faculty development. From a student learning approach, you could use some of the strategies within it to support ELL students. From a faculty development perspective, it could be used to enhance faculty understanding of how to work within a culturally diverse environment.
