1.3 Policies, Procedures, Programs & Funding
Candidates research, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, programs and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in the school, district, state, and federal technology plans and guidelines. Funding strategies may include the development, submission, and evaluation of formal grant proposals. (PSC 1.3/ISTE 1c)
Artifact: The Action Plan, Technology Integration Grant, Emerging Technology Project
Reflection:
1. Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was/were your individual contribution(s)?
This standard is fulfilled with three different artifacts: the action plan, the technology integration grant, and the emerging technology project. All three of these artifacts represent different aspects of the standard.
The Action Plan was built in ITEC Course 7410. The Action plan was written as part of the course using Milton High School as my school model. At the time, I was working as an instructional technology coach at Milton for 1 day a week as part of the personalized learning project with KSU ITeach. The action plan focuses on moving Milton from a lecture based environment to a blended learning environment, which I observed as a need during my time there
The Technology Integration Grant was written in ITEC 7410 as well. It was written as a possible grant to improve our services at KSU Iteach. The grant details a plan to build a virtual reality kit that can be taken to classrooms in order to take students on virtual fieldtrips. This is an emerging technology that allows students to visit a place without physically going there, and it can be adapted to many curriculum areas. The kit also was meant as a way to create virtual fieldtrips using the Ricoh Theta camera.
The emerging technology project was built in ITEC 7445. In the emerging technology project I highlighted one of my favorite tools, Touchcast. It is one of the best video production apps I have found, I think it is truly becoming an emerging leader in video production.
2. Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it is placed. See the portfolio rubric and watch the videos for more details on what to include in your reflection for this question. You must respond to each of the items on the rubric in this question! It is VERY IMPORTANT that you address ALL of the criteria on the rubric. This one question may need to be several paragraphs long in order to address all of the items on the rubric.
Each artifact represents a different aspect of the standard. The Action Plan references things that can be implemented to achieve the shared vision at Milton High School. The Technology Integration Grant answers the funding strategies portion of the standard including the development of grant proposals. The emerging technology project represents the portion of the standard that ask a candidate to research and recommend.
My action plan was written as a way to achieve the shared vision at Milton High School. It contains policies, procedures, and programs that were recommended to achieve the shared vision of Milton High School to move to a more blended learning environment. It also contains strategies to implement them.
My grant proposal contains a grant to implement VR strategies within classrooms that KSU Iteach support. It contains research into new technology innovation, how to implement it in classrooms, and strategies to fund the project. It also directly meets the portion of the standard concerned with grant writing considering that’s what it actually is.
The emerging technology project meets the portion of the standard that requires research and recommendation. The project asked to find an emerging technology and evaluate it for classroom use. We had to research, which tools are emerging as leaders in the field, and we had to evaluate them to see the reasons they should be recommended to classrooms.
3. What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact? Not changing anything is NOT an acceptable response.
I think each of these projects taught me different things. The action plan taught me to think on a strategic plan level, which is something I had not participated in before. The action plan changed my mindset to think on the school strategic plan level. The technology integration grant gave me practice in grant writing, which is always valuable as we confront schools with lack of resources. The emerging technology project gave me practice in taking a technology and evaluating it for schools.
All of these artifacts could be improved. I think with the action plan improvement revolves around getting more school staff involved and giving the school he opportunity to use my action plan if they saw fit. In my role with KSU Iteach, some of these activities go outside the bounds of contracts, and so working through implementation is not always easy. I could however send the plan to the school, and they could use it as they saw fit. With the Technology Integration Grant, I think you can always reevaluate the technology requested. I think I would have to take a look at Google Pixels and Day Dream headsets. I personally don’t know that there is much I can do to improve the emerging technology project as it is pretty straight forward, but if I had to I think it would be to push into a newer technology then Touchcast. By doing so, I might have had more authentic practice.
4. How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement, faculty development, or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
All three of these artifacts have different effects. The Action Plan is a plan that has aspects to improve the school, faculty development, and student learning. The Technology Innovation Grant proposed a new initiative that will directly impact student learning, and the emerging technology project evaluates a new technology for both the faculty’s development and to use to improve student learning.
The action plan lays out a plan for Milton High School to improve learning using technology. It can be used as a part of the strategic plan, and it contains plans to both improve both faculty development and student learning. The Technology Integration Grant sets out a grant proposal the KSU Iteach would use to improve student learning. It details how we would get virtual reality headsets and put them into use in order to take students places they may not have been. The Emerging Technology Project evaluates Touchcast in order to look at ways to use it with students. The evaluation of this tool shows the benefit of it to teachers, and hopefully they will use it to improve student learning.
