2.8 Data Analysis
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of digital tools and resources to systematically collect and analyze student achievement data, interpret results, communicate findings, and implement appropriate interventions to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning. (PSC 2.8/ISTE 2h)
Artifact: Data Overview
Reflection:
1. Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was/were your individual contribution(s)?
The artifact for this standard was the Data Overview completed in the Data Analysis class. I am no longer part of a school or district, so this overview was done using data from Campbell High School. I used Campbell because the data was east to obtain through my mother, Karen Lockhart, who is an AP there.
2. Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it is placed. See the portfolio rubric and watch the videos for more details on what to include in your reflection for this question. You must respond to each of the items on the rubric in this question! It is VERY IMPORTANT that you address ALL of the criteria on the rubric. This one question may need to be several paragraphs long in order to address all of the items on the rubric.
The Data overview is meant as a comprehensive overview of student data from Campbell High School so it contains all of the elements within the standard. It includes EOC scores from every subject area, what there results mean, gives an easy presentation to digest findings, and includes interventions.
3. What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact? Not changing anything is NOT an acceptable response.
I found this project to be one of the most helpful that I did. As a regular classroom teacher, my look into school achievement data usually consisted of an overview (that I did not pay attention to) at the beginning of the school year, and the data that mattered to me. This project allowed me to look at the whole school and really analyze student needs based on data. I think if I had to improve it, it would just be increasing the scope. In my current position, it’s hard to get this data from a school that I am not at, and I think it would have been more comprehensive if I had data such as AP and SAT scores.
4. How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement, faculty development, or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
Data overviews are looking at the overall school environment and seeing trends that can improve student achievement. From this data, you could gain trends that identify areas that need improvement. You could identify faculty gaps that need to be developed, and through both of those you could improve student learning.
