1.2 Strategic Planning
Candidates facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans. (PSC 1.2/ISTE 1b)
Artifact: SWOT Analysis, Action Plan
Reflection:
1. Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was/were your individual contribution(s)?
Both of my artifacts for this standard were created as I was servicing Milton High School in my role with Kennesaw State University Iteach during my time on the Fulton County personalized learning project.
Both the SWOT analysis and Action Plan were written based on my observations on what was working at Milton and what needed improvement. Milton has many of the same issues that most high schools have with their instructional strategies being heavily centered on a lecture based format. This was pointed out in the SWOT, and the SWOT also highlighted the places of strength.
The action plan lays out ways to improve upon the weaknesses of the SWOT, take advantage of the opportunities, and limit the threats. The action plan predominantly focuses on ways to move from a teacher based lecture environment to a student centric blended learning environment.
2. Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it is placed. See the portfolio rubric and watch the videos for more details on what to include in your reflection for this question. You must respond to each of the items on the rubric in this question! It is VERY IMPORTANT that you address ALL of the criteria on the rubric. This one question may need to be several paragraphs long in order to address all of the items on the rubric.
The combination of the articles meets the standards. The SWOT analysis informs the action plan in order to meet every aspect of the standard.
When doing a SWOT analysis, you look at the strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats of a school. I did this for Milton within my SWOT, and by doing so I addressed areas related to the design, development, and evaluation portions of the standard. To design an action plan, you first need to know what you are designing for and the SWOT addresses that by helping you develop an understanding of the school. A SWOT analysis can also be used as a great way to evaluate both where a school is, and to evaluate an action plans effectiveness after it has been implemented.
The process of designing an Action Plan also gives me as a candidate experience in both the design and development of a technology infused portion of a strategic plan. The action plan can be included as the technology portion of a strategic plan. It also contains steps for both implementing and the methods of communication for the plan.
3. What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact? Not changing anything is NOT an acceptable response.
As I started the program I had experience in two areas: I was a classroom teacher and I worked as a contracted education technology specialist on a district personalized learning project. I had not been part of a schools strategic planning and implementation process. This project gives me some experience in that area for any future roles that I may be placed in.
While there is not much I would do differently, I think the one real thing is have more involvement from school personal or pick a school that could take my project and run with it. As a contracted education technology specialist, our influence over school action plans is limited, and setting this project up in a way that could be more helpful to the school would have been great.
4. How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement, faculty development, or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
This work lays out an action plan to shift Milton High School from a traditionally lecture based environment. If the action plan was adopted and followed it could lead Milton to a more fully personalized environment. With this standard impact could be assessed with another SWOT analysis as you could compare the results with the first one completed.
